A collection of free crochet hat patterns. These hat patterns use either Bulky or Super Bulky weight yarn.
When you want to make a crochet hat do you normally want a quick project that results in a warm cozy beanie?
When a bulky or super bulky weight yarn is used to make a chunky crochet hat it normally results in a quick project.
Whether you need to make a few hats for a craft show or make some as gifts, making a hat with a bulky weight yarn is a great way to go.
How do you know whether a yarn is Bulky or Super Bulky?
You will need to refer to the yarn label for that information. A bulky weight yarn is categorized as a #5 and is also referred to as Chunky. A Super Bulky Weight yarn is categorized as a #6.
What if you have a yarn that doesn't have a label? There is a trick to finding out what weight it is if you aren't sure. You can use wraps per inch to check what weight category your yarn is.
- Wrap the yarn around something like a pencil and then measure how many wraps it has in 1 inch. Bulky weight yarn can have 6-9 wraps per inch and super bulky weight yarn can have 5-6 wraps per inch.
Examples of #5 bulky weight yarn:
- Lion Brand Color Made Easy, Hue & Me, Boogie Nights
- Red Heart Soft Essentials, Hygge
- Premier Serenity, Puzzle
Examples of #6 super bulky yarn:
- Lion Brand Wool Ease Quick & Thick, Hometown Yarn
- Bernat Softee Chunky
- Caron Chunky Cakes
